Stanthorpe Eco Expo

The 2024 Expo was a wonderful day!

The Whistle Stop Heritage and Community Garden…

Who would have thought back in July 2008 that the Stanthorpe Railway Station precinct would become the vibrant community centre that it is today?

It all started with an idea.

Under the auspices of Stanthorpe Training Centre a grant was obtained as part of the 150 years of Queensland celebrations. The idea was to restore the old Railway Station gardens while providing work experience opportunities for people wanting to enter the workforce. In 2011, a community garden was added with 6 months funding from Community Development Services.

The two gardens later joined forces to become the Whistle Stop Heritage and Community Garden. Over the years various grants, lots of plant sales, and literally thousands of volunteer hours added tanks, tools, a hot house, potting area, worm farms, wick beds, a pergola and all the many things needed for a working garden.

Today the garden is an attractive and thriving community resource. Across the tracks are the restored Railway Station houses, Artworks Granite Belt, and Cafe. There is a beautiful garden which runs along the Davadi Street side of the precinct. On Saturday mornings the area comes alive with a predominantly organic Farmers Market. The old QFS building is being restored with incredible potential to provide community space.

What better place than the WhistleStop Community Garden to be the setting for this year’s Stanthorpe Eco Expo on Saturday 7th September.

At Stanthorpe Eco Expo we take seriously the responsibility of each and every one of us to do our part to live sustainably on this beautiful planet of ours.

Come along and be inspired.
